ドイツのフラウンホーファー応用素材研究所(IFAM)はロストフォーム鋳造(砂型鋳造)を使い、インホイールモーターなどの部品を製造する方法の研究に取り組んでいる。ロストフォーム鋳造では例えば、電気モーターのケースでは冷却路を組み込んだケースを鋳造できるなど、ダイカスト(金型鋳造)に比べ複雑な構造の部品を生産できる利点がある。ひとつの鋳造工程で複数の機能を持つ部品を製造できるため、複数の鋳造部品を接合するといった手間や時間を節約できる利点もあるという。
