独自動車大手のダイムラー は2012年春からドイツのデュッセルドルフでカーシェアリングサービス「Car2go」を開始する。超小型車ブランド、スマートの2人乗りモデル「フォーツー」を300台投入する計画で、地域の近距離交通や自治体が運営する自転車のレンタルステーションなどとも連携し、利便性を高める方針を示している。Car2goは、登録手続きを済ませると一定の地域内に配置された車両を自由に利用できるサービスで、レンタカー大手のユーロップカーと共同で運営している。
