欧州連合（EU）加盟国は10日開いた外相・貿易相理事会で、マレーシアとの自由貿易協定（FTA）締結に向けた交渉を開始することで合意した。東南アジア諸国連合（ASEAN）加盟国ではすでにシンガポールがEUとのFTA交渉に入っているほか、ベトナムも今年3月に交渉開始で合意しており、マレーシアは3カ国目となる。マレーシアにとってEUは4番目の貿易相手地域であり、2009年の貿易取引額は244億ユーロに達している。
